Quote: "Why don't we have snow, and sleds, and hills?" (p. 80)
Reaction: I thought I understood why he didn’t know if he had it or not. Since he barely knew anything about the world outside or the past, I thought it was obvious that he wouldn’t know. I mean that if I didn’t know anything about the outside world, I wouldn’t know what snow, sleds, or hills are and why we wouldn’t have them around.

Quote: "We shouldn't have!" Jonas said fiercely (p. 91)
Reaction: I think he is right. I don’t think they should have Sameness. I am 100% agreeing with Jonas. Sameness is good, but it is also bad in some ways. It is good because there is no racism, but it is bad because nobody has a real personality.

Vocabulary: access (p. 97)- (n.) a permission to go in or view. “You and I are the only ones with access to the books.”
Quote: "We really have to protect people from wrong choices.” (p. 93 )
Reaction: I agree with this statement. I agree that it makes people safer. If they make a wrong choice, they could get hurt, but a right choice keeps people safe and away from harm and danger. So, I totally agree with this statement.

Vocabulary: excruciating (p. 105)- (adj.) absolute pain. “Why?” Jonas asked him after he had received a torturous memory in which he had been neglected and unfed; the hunger had caused excruciating spasms in his empty, distended stomach.”
Quote: "They selected me and you to lift that burden from themselves." (p. 107)
Reaction: I thought this was horrible. I couldn’t believe that they would just take that burden and put it on someone else. That might make the person getting the burden really sad and depressed. I just don’t think this is right.

Vocabulary: anguish (p. 112)- (n.) suffering. “Put your hands on me,” he directed, aware that in such anguish The Giver might need reminding.”
Quote: The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. "Forgive me, " he said. (p. 114)
Reaction: I thought what he had done to Jonas was just awful. Making him be in a war is just cruel. Jonas could have been scared for life. This memory could have changed him forever.

Vocabulary: obsolete (p. 120)- (adj.) out dated; rarely used. “Your father means that you used a very generalized word, so meaningless that it’s almost obsolete,” his mother explained carefully.”
Quote: "And they won't be part of my life anymore. . . And they'll be well cared for and respected." (p. 118)
Reaction: I thought it is good that he was happy when he knows his parents will be well cared for and respected. But when he says “And they won't be part of my life anymore”, I thought it was bad that he was happy when he knew that. I know that he will have moved on, but not having your parents not in your life at any time is, to me, just horribly sad and disappointing.
